How to Survive Winter Dryness

How to Survive Winter Dryness
Winter is a time of year that many people look forward to, with its cozy blankets, hot cocoa, and holiday cheer. However, for those with sensitive skin, winter can also bring about a host of dryness issues that affect not only the skin, but also the hair and nails.

Dryness is a common problem during the winter months due to the combination of cold, dry air outside and heated, dry air inside. This can lead to dehydrated skin, chapped lips, and dry, flaky scalp. The lack of moisture in the air can also cause nails to become brittle and prone to breaking.

To help combat these issues, it's important to incorporate a few key steps into your skincare routine.

      • Stay Hydrated: Combat dryness on the inside by keeping up with drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water everyday. Start your day with a glass of warm water to kick start your metabolism.

      • Moisturize. Always: Using a moisturizer on a daily basis is the holy grail of keeping skin hydrated. Look for a natural & hydrating formula like our Natural Body Lotions that you can lather on throughout the day. If you're experiencing particularly dry skin and want to heal rough and dry batches, you might want to consider using a heavier, oil-based moisturizer to provide an extra layer of protection such as Natural Body Butter or Balms. To ensure that you're keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day, consider carrying an on-the-go moisturizer with you wherever you go like our Skin Rescue Body Balm.

      • Exfoliate: keep your skin bright & soft with a weekly scrubbing. Removing dead skin cells will help to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, and will also allow your moisturizer to penetrate more effectively. Just be sure to use a gentle exfoliator, as harsh products can strip the skin of its natural oils and exacerbate dryness.

      • Remember your Scalp: It's also important to pay attention to the hair during the winter months. To keep your scalp hydrated and flake-free and help preserve your hair's natural moisture and prevent over-stripping, consider using natural products whenever possible. Many commercial hair care products can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. Some options to consider include using a natural deep conditioning treatment a natural shampoo and conditioner made with nourishing ingredients like aloe vera and argan oil, and follow with a leave-in conditioner for an extra hydration. Also try using a weekly hair oil bath with Ever Long Hair oil to keep your scalp hydrated and promote healthy hair growth.

      • Nail care: Winter can be also a tough time for nails, as the dry, cold air can lead to dryness and brittleness. This can make your nails more prone to breaking, which can be frustrating and unsightly. To help combat this issue, it's important to take steps to keep your nails moisturized and nourished. One way to do this is by using a cuticle oil that can help to nourish the cuticles and keep the nails strong and healthy. It's also important to keep your nails trimmed and well-groomed, as unmanaged nails are more prone to breaking.

      • Avoid Hot showers: we’re all guilty of cranking up the heat in the shower to defrost but it can really take a toll on your skin and can strip the skin of its natural oils. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and be sure to moisturize immediately after showering. You should also invest in a humidifier to help add moisture back into the air.

Winter doesn't have to mean dry, uncomfortable skin, hair, and nails. By incorporating these tips into your skincare routine and making a few simple lifestyle changes, you can keep your skin, hair, and nails looking and feeling their best all season long.
